With the sunny weather experienced over the last week, and forecasters showing that it's expected to remain nice over the coming few days, it really does feel like spring is in the air!
Soil temperatures at 10cm depth have reached 5C or higher for more than 10 days in a row now in Aberystwyth, indicating that fertiliser can now be applied. In response to this, Innovis shepherds are busy applying nitrogen fertiliser at Peithyll and on the lower south facing fields at Mynydd Gorddu. Contractors have also spread 150t of lime at Peithyll this week, to ensure that all fields are up to pH6. Three fallow fields at Peithyll will also be ploughed next week, ready to be reseeded later on with permanent pasture.
After a month with no ewes to lamb, lambing starts again at Mynydd Gorddu this weekend. This time there are 250 AI and ET ewes to lamb. After a one week break, it will be in full swing again with 500 ewes and ewe lambs to lamb into April. There are also 160 ewes to lamb at the satellite flock in Hampshire over the next few days, followed by another 300 ewes to lamb there next week and the week after. The ewes at Mynydd Gorddu are being fed concentrate flat rate, with twins receiving 500g/head/day along with silage, and ewe lambs on 300g/head/day, all split between two feeds in the morning and evening. Let's hope for further good weather over lambing!
